Auditions have opened for Dear Straight People’s upcoming gay short film, ‘IT GETS BETTER’ (working title).

The film is set to be directed by Singaporean director Jason Lee.

Jason started his filmmaking career at the tender age of 17, when he produced his first short film independently. Since then, Jason has gone on to direct critically acclaimed short films for renowned platforms such as Viddsee and Mediacorp.

Some of his notable works include ‘The Buddy’, which has garnered over 3.5 million views to date.

IT GETS BETTER

PLOT: Set in the 1990s, a young gay couple attempt to build a relationship during a time of heightened homophobia.

Co-written by Jason Lee and Sean Foo (Getaway), ‘It Gets Betteris a bittersweet love story that examines the challenges that same-sex couples faced in the not-so-distant past.

Veteran actor Steven David Lim has been confirmed as part of the cast. Aspiring actors can vie for 4 speaking roles. Additionally, opportunities to be extras are also available for anyone, regardless of your age, gender and sexual orientation.

ROLES OPEN FOR AUDITION

MARCUS: Aged 20 – 35 / Chinese / Lead role

  • Extroverted, cheeky and a bit of a dreamer, Marcus is a hopeless romantic who gives his all in relationships.
  • Steven David Lim plays the older version of Marcus so the ideal candidate should bear a passing resemblance to Steven.

HASSIM: Aged 20 – 35 / Any race / Lead role

  • Grounded and practical, Hassim starts to lose faith in his relationship admist an increasingly homophobic climate.

ZACH: Aged 20 – 30 / Any race / Support role

  • Outgoing and confident, Zach has a thing for older men.

CHEE KEONG: Aged 30 – 65 / Chinese / Support role

  • Fierce and intimidating, Chee Keong is a homophobic Ah Beng.
  • Fluency in Hokkien is ideal.

EXTRAS: Non-speaking roles

  • Heterosexual family with kid(s)
  • Same-sex couple(s)
  • Jogger
  • Seniors
  • LGBTQIA+ individuals

AUDITION FOR IT GETS BETTER

While acting experience would be a bonus, it is not required. As long as you believe that you suit the role, you are more than welcome to apply.

Before you send in your application, do take note that you must be comfortable with publicly appearing in a gay short film.

SHOOT DATE

The shoot will be on 21 July from 7pm onwards.

FAQ

Is this a paid job?

Yes, all roles will be paid. The more prominent your role, the higher the remuneration.

Are the roles only open to Singaporeans?

As long as you’re based in Singapore during the day of the shoot, you are welcome to audition.

If you are willing to fly to Singapore specifically for this shoot, you are welcome to do so but Dear Straight People will not cover the cost of your flight and accommodation.

How many roles can I apply for?

You can apply for as many roles as you would like.

But please only apply for roles that you are suited for.

Can I only apply for a non-speaking role?

Yes! Applications are also open to those who merely want to be extras.

Applications close on 5 July 2023. The earlier you apply, the higher the likelihood of you getting shortlisted. So send in your application as soon as possible!
