The Internet is an infinite canvas for our personal curation. In many ways, we all live in echo chambers. But for some reason, I’ve started seeing concerning Singaporean content pop up on my algorithm – the crude, far-right, pseudo-intellectual type.

I couldn’t help but notice one commonality across all these different platforms: their painfully conservative, homophobic ideals.

After doing a little research, I finally found a name for them: the alt-rights.

THE ALT-RIGHTS ORIGIN STORY

If you’ve never heard of the term alt-right before, here’s a brief insight.

The Alternative-Right movement refers to a political phenomenon with far-right roots in the United States, that endorses white nationalism in an extremist fashion.

The term was first coined in 2008 by American white supremacist Richard Betrand Spencer. He defined the central goal as protecting “traditional [white] Western civilization” from “multicultural forces”.

Through online message boards and platforms like Reddit and Twitter, the Alt-Right movement has attracted a typically white cis-het male demographic. drawn to the movement’s ‘edginess’,  followers often use their online platforms to target marginalised populations for kicks, including women and racial and sexual minorities.

In recent times, the Alt-Right movement has started to gain traction in Singapore. In this article, we unpack the alt-right movement in Singapore by covering everything you need to know about this worrying phenonmenon.
