If you have been living under a rock and think that we are talking about something under a tree, let us first explain what shade is. Shade pretty much refers to the art of acting in a disrespectful manner towards someone in a subtle, but kind of obvious way.

And nobody, I mean nobody throws shade as well as female pop stars! Pop divas all seem to have mastered the art of throwing shade. In fact, it seems like the ability to flawlessly throw shade has become some kind of unspoken prerequisite to becoming a credible diva.

In order to thank them for their contribution to the shade industry, we’ve compiled a list of the top 8 shadiest divas of all time!

8. Jennifer Lopez

Jennifer Lopez’s style of shade is very subtle, and often not aimed at anyone in particular. Nevertheless, the shade thrown by this latin pop diva is still shady as hell.

For example, when Jennifer Lopez was asked during an interview with regards to her taste in men, she replied with this very shady line

“I’m not, like, a looks person—I don’t know if you noticed over the years,”

Ouch! Our bet is that she was referring to Marc Anthony!

7. Janet Jackson

Janet Jackson may speak in a sweet and sugary tone most of the time but that doesn’t mean that she can’t throw shade when the need arises.

For example, when an interviewer compared Janet to Madonna, Janet replied with this infamous line

Yup, Janet Jackson pretty much just called Madonna trashy! Not many people would dare to attack the Queen of Pop and for that, Janet Jackson deserves some recognition for her courage!

Britney Spears has thrown a lot of shade over the years, but its usually in the form of a bitchy eye roll or a disgusted facial expression. When she does use words to throw shade however, she usually does it in a passive-aggressive manner. For example, during the recent twitter catfight between Britney and Iggy, Britney made fun of Iggy’s cancelled tour dates with this shady tweet:

“Can’t wait to get back to Vegas. So thankful I have shows for the rest of the year to look forward to,”

5. Beyonce

In order to maintain the perfect image that Beyonce has carefully crafted for herself, Beyonce rarely says anything bitchy or shady. No, Beyonce is way too classy for that. Instead, Beyonce usually throws shade through eye rolls and side eyes. Her most famous shade throwing incident though, has got to be the infamous cough she gave when former bandmate Kelly Rowland said that she was the ‘second lead vocalist of the group’:

Christina Aguilera has thrown shade at pretty much everyone from Britney to Kelly Osbourne and even to her fellow Voice judges. Unlike Beyonce or Britney who are a lot more subtle in their shade throwing, Christina doesn’t hold back. She even dared to attack the Queen of shade, Mariah herself!

“One time, we were at a party and I think she got really drunk, and she had just really derogatory things to say to me. But it was at that time that she had that breakdown, so she might have been very medicated.
