Dear Straight People,

Section 377A may have been repealed, but Singapore is far from being an LGBTQ+ friendly city.

Kira Moon, a drag queen in Singapore, was assaulted in a homophobic incident following a night out on March 10. The incident occurred near Marina Bay Sands as Kira and her friends were searching for food.

Homophobic Hate Crime In Singapore

According to Kira, a random Chinese stranger from a group of eight men began hurling derogatory slurs, including the term ‘faggot’ in Malay, as she and her companions descended an escalator. Kira bravely confronted the group alone, sparking a heated argument that escalated into physical violence. During the altercation, Kira was assaulted, causing her wig to be forcibly removed. Kira’s straight male friend rushed over to intervene, only to become the target of the group’s aggression. He was outnumbered and subjected to a barrage of punches and kicks, leaving him injured and overwhelmed by the assailants’ collective force.

After the assault, the perpetrators returned to apologise, claiming intoxication as the cause of their actions. However, Kira promptly contacted the police.

Upon their arrival, authorities stated that the case was non-arrestable and would require an arrest warrant issued by the court for further action. This was despite the fact that CCTV footage confirmed that the assault was started by the other party.

The incident was subsequently publicised on X, where the post swiftly gained traction, amassing over half a million views to date.

While Section 377A has been repealed, this incident highlights ongoing issues of discrimination and violence against the LGBTQ+ community in Singapore.

Kira expressed her intention to pursue legal action against her assailants, emphasising the need for greater protection and accountability for victims of hate crimes.
