If you are starting to get tired of watching superhero movies, here are 5 upcoming LGBT films that you could catch instead. No actually scratch that, you absolutely need to watch the following 5 LGBT films being released this coming fall!

  1. About Ray 

US Release Date: September 18th

Cast: Elle Fanning, Naomi Watts, Susan Sarandon, Tate Donovan and Sam Trammel

What it’s about: A teenager wants to transition from a female to a male but he first needs his mother, lesbian grandmother and absent father to come to terms with his decision.

Why you need to watch it: Apart from the fact that the trailer looks absolutely amazing, this film also has Academy Award winner Susan Sarandon playing the role of a funny lesbian grandmother. That alone is enough to get me to watch this film.

2. Stonewall

US Release Date: September 25th

Cast: Jeremy Irvine, Jonny Beauchamp, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Ron Perlman and Joey King

What it’s about: Directed by Roland Emmerich, this film is a fictionalised version of the 1969 Stonewall Riots, which were a series of violent demonstrations by members of the LGBT community.

Why you need to watch it: It’ll be interesting to see just how much Hollywood manages to whitewash this historic event.

3. Carol

US Release Date: November 20th

Cast: Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara, Sarah Paulson

What it’s about: A lesbian love affair set in the 1950s

Why you need to watch it: It stars 2-time Oscar winner Cate Blanchett! Nuff said.

4. The Danish Girl

US Release Date: November 20th

Cast: Eddie Redmayne, Alicia Vikander, Matthias Schoenaerts

What it’s about: An autobiographical film based on one of the first recipients of gender reassignment surgery.

Why you need to watch it: Apart from an awesome trailer, it’ll be interesting to see if Eddie Redmaybe manages to deliver another Oscar worthy performance.

5. Life 

US Release Date: December 4th

Cast: Robert Pattinson, Dane DeHaan, Ben Kingsley

What it’s about: A biological drama film based on the friendship of photographer Dennis Stock and Hollwood icon James Dean.

Why you need to watch it: It has been heavily speculated that James Dean was either bisexual or homosexual so it will be interesting to see whether this film dares to explore that aspect of this Hollywood icon.
