Getaway – Singapore’s First BL Web Series

Produced in 2022, Getaway made history as Singapore’s first BL (Boys Love) web series.

As the name suggests, BL dramas explore romantic relationships between men, a genre that has gained immense popularity in recent times.

Getaway was made possible through the support of a diverse group of sponsors, led by The Siam Hotel, an exclusive urban luxury resort in Bangkok. Other sponsors include Four Seasons Hotel Bangkok at Chao Phraya River, Gayhealth.sg, 2Eros, Supawear, Ette Tea and FabulousMe.

Helmed by director Ark Saroj, Getaway distinguished itself from other BL dramas by featuring an openly queer cast from Singapore and Thailand. The ensemble includes Sean Foo and Paween ‘Snooker’ Nalieng in leading roles, alongside Steven David Lim (Growing Up), Sirinutt Cholvibool (Bangkok G Story) and comedian Hirzi Zulkiflie.

Comprising 5 episodes, Getaway‘s first episode recently crossed 2 million views, solidifying its position as Singapore’s most-watched LGBT+ film on YouTube to date. Furthermore, the web series received a nomination for ‘Content of the Year’ at the 2023 edition of The Pinwheels, an award ceremony organised by Singapore’s national broadcaster Mediacorp, recognising excellence in online content from Singapore.

Following Getaway’s popular reception, GagaOOLala has bought the streaming rights to the web series, ensuring that Getaway will now reach an even broader audience.

GagaOOLaLa – Largest Asian Streaming Platform for LGBTQ Content

Based in Taiwan, GagaOOLaLa was founded by Jay Lin in 2017.

Recent years have seen BL dramas take the world by storm, with an estimated 200 BL titles released across Asia in 2022. As the largest streaming platform for queer content in Asia, GagaOOLaLa has grown in tandem with the BL phenomenon.

By 2022, GagaOOLala had amassed an impressive community of over 2.5 million members, from 191 countries with the United States, Taiwan, and Thailand comprising their three largest markets. The platform has also experienced a staggering 96% increase in registrations, with over 1 million active monthly users.

In addition to curating queer content for a global audience, GagaOOLala produces its own original titles that have garnered acclaim.

Fragrance of the First Flower, one of their original dramas, claimed three major awards in the Miniseries category at the Golden Bell Awards, Taiwan’s equivalent of the Emmys. These accolades included Best Actress (ZaiZai Lin), Best Supporting Actress (Lyan Cheng), and Best Writer (Angel Teng).

With a mission to enhance the visibility of LGBTQ+ media across the globe, GagaOOLala recently organised the inaugural “Taiwan LGBTQ+ BL Mixer Night Out” during the Asia TV Forum & Market held in Singapore.

Getaway Premiers On GagaOOLala on 28 September

Getaway will be making its international premier on GagaOOLala on 28 September.

Getaway follows Singaporean Sam, who jets off to Bangkok in search of his exiled gay uncle after his coming out to his dad goes horribly wrong. In Bangkok, Sam stumbles upon Top, a charismatic party boy looking for love in all the wrong places.

Apart from Getaway, you can also look forward to Boys Like Boys, a gay dating reality show that will grace the screens of GagaOOLaLa in October.
