Dear Uni Students,
Admit it! You’ve all hated on art students before! Hating on art students has become some sort of sick ritual that all University students partake in. And honestly, I don’t really blame you guys. I mean, art students really do make excellent fodder for derogatory jokes.
For example, their lack of job prospects can always be depended on to elicit a laugh or two!
Their lack of contribution to society can always be turned into a witty meme!
And best of all, their lack of exams totally justifies all the hate that they’re getting so you don’t even feel any remorse when you make a joke about them!
Well HA HA HA… Your art jokes are so funny!
But guess what… I’m not laughing! And neither are all the other art students that you’ve been making fun of.
You see, as a former arts student, I am quite sick of being at the receiving end of these derogatory jokes. And believe me when I say this, I have heard every single art-related joke before. And you know what… they are starting to get really old.
I’m sick of being told that I’m going to end up working at a fast-food joint. Or that what I’m learning is really easy. I’ve had enough of people complaining about my lack of exams and I’m tired of being told that I’m wasting my time and money on something that is not going to translate into a proper career.
But you know what the most frustrating thing about all the hate towards art students is? It’s that there is little basis to most of the jokes!
Yes, we may not have to sit for any exams for most of our units. But many of us do have something else equally dreadful to prepare for; Essays!!! Anyone who has been forced to write an arts essay will know that they are definitely not easy to write. For an exam, you guys probably only need to study one textbook. For an essay, we need to sift through dozens of sleep inducing journal articles that are often written in such a profound way that they may as well have been written in Greek.
I’m pretty sure that if you were asked to tackle an arts essay, most of you will probably end up like this dude
And contrary to popular belief, most art students do not actually end up working for McDonalds. Believing that you are going to go further in life just because you are studying engineering or business etc makes you sound a lot more naïve than the art students that you look down on. Life is a very long journey and how much you manage to achieve on it depends on a lot more than the degree you’re pursuing.
In fact, some of the most successful people in the world graduated with an art degree. For example, the CEO of PayPal Peter Thiel graduated with a philosophy degree from Stanford University. The CEO of American Express Ken Chenault was a history major at Bowdoin College. The former CEO of Disney, Michael Eisner graduated with a double major in English and theatre from Denison University. So the next time you decide to make a joke about art students, just keep in mind that you may one day, end up working for them.
But apart from the fact that a lot of the allegations made against art students don’t hold much weight, the main reason why University students need to stop hating on art students is because it is just an incredibly immature thing to do. For God’s sake, you guys are all young adults now. Please start acting your age. All this hate towards art students is completely uncalled for and honestly, we don’t deserve it.
So while it may seem like a bit of a stretch, let’s all stop hating on art students shall we?
