On 30th June, the world premiere of Salam Gembira took place at The Projector in Singapore, closing out Pride Month with a bold statement on representation and inclusivity.

Salam Gembira – A Comedy Tackling The Modern Malay Identity

Salam Gembira tells the story of Moe, a Singaporean Malay man living in The Netherlands with his Dutch girlfriend, Samantha. Their unconventional living arrangement contradicts Islamic principles.

When Moe’s devout Muslim parents make an unexpected visit, Moe convinces Samantha to swap living situations with her gay brother, Daniel, allowing Moe and Daniel to pose as flat-sharing “bros.” The situation becomes increasingly hilarious as Moe’s parents begin to suspect their son might be gay.

Review: A Delightful Cinematic Experience

Dear Straight People was fortunate to be invited to the world premiere of Salam Gembira. We found the movie to be funny, heartwarming, and an entertainingly easy watch.

The city of Rotterdam provided a beautiful backdrop that enhanced the film’s visual appeal. The Singaporean cast delivered fantastic performances, though we did notice that some of the Dutch cast members seemed a bit stiff, perhaps due to differences in acting styles.

The premiere night featured the film’s stars—Rizal Aiman, Rafaat Haji Hamzah, and Rozita Abu—who openly discussed their initial reservations about participating in a film addressing LGBT themes, particularly within the Malay-Muslim community. Despite not identifying as pro-LGBT, the actors expressed profound respect for the queer community and its struggles, emphasising the importance of empathy and understanding.

Overall, Salam Gembira is a great film that we highly encourage everyone to watch. The themes of the film are quite universal and extend beyond LGBT issues, making it appealing to a broad audience.

Securing Distribution: A Cinematic Triumph

The real triumph of Salam Gembira lies in its successful navigation of Singapore’s stringent censorship regulations. The film received an R21 rating, allowing it to be screened for adult audiences. .

Filmgarde, a key player in Singapore’s cinema landscape, secured exclusive rights to distribute Salam Gembira. By bringing Salam Gembira to local audiences, Filmgarde not only supports artistic expression but also encourages societal dialogue on issues of identity and acceptance.

Salam Gembira – A Step In The Right Direction

Salam Gembira serves as a catalyst for conversation, challenging viewers to confront their prejudices and empathise with those navigating complex intersections of identity. Through a narrative infused with humour, heartache, and hope, the film invites audiences to reflect on societal norms shaping our lives and relationships.
