Dear Straight People,

On Wednesday, 13 July, a staff member at Hwa Chong Institute, who was alleged to be a school counsellor, gave a talk to secondary 4 students using questionable content against the LGBT+ community.

The talk showed slides which made discriminatory and absurd statements such as “58% of homosexuals have problems with intestinal worms” and “23% of children with lesbian parents have been sexually abused”.

Photos of slides from the talk quickly went viral, and caused much distress to the LGBT+ community, especially since it is reportedly given by a school counsellor at one of Singapore’s top schools.

Hwa Chong Institute have issued a response, providing Straits Times with the following statement:

We are aware of the incident which took place during a presentation on sexuality where a staff member incorporated content outside the scope of the Ministry of Education’s (MOE) Sexuality Education curriculum into his slides.

The views presented were the individual staff’s personal perspectives and not representative of the position of the school or MOE.

We take a serious view of this incident and have met up with our students to address their concerns. To ensure that such incidents are not repeated, we will also review our processes.

According to the report on The Straits Times, the staff member has been reprimanded and suspended from delivering lessons related to sex education.
